Yellow Rocket – also referred to as Winter Cress, St. Barbaras Cress, Bitter Cress, and Rocket Cress – can be a winter annual, biennial, or seldom a perennial. Barbarea vulgaris can be found in lawns, gardens, along roadsides and also is commonly sold in nurseries as a decorative plant. Preferring loamy soils, Yellow Rocket thrives throughout much of the continental United States, with the exception of a few of the southernmost areas.
Identifying Yellow Rocket -
Yellow Rocket can be identified by its numerous stems branching from a basal rosette of deep-green, glossy foliage. The leaves forming the basal rosette are smooth, glossy and thick, while the stem leaves have fewer and smaller lobes than the basal leaves.
Yellow Rocket features bright yellow flowers that appear in early spring. However, only mature plants bloom because flowering stems are only produced in the second year. Reproduction is by seed.
Yellow Rocket Control -
Proper cultural practices, such as proper mowing and watering, can help to prevent Yellow Rocket by creating dense turf, which inhibits the weed’s ability to grow. Physical removal (i.e. “weed pulling”) can be effective, although you will run the risk of spreading the seeds to additional areas of your lawn and landscaping.
Scotts LawnService uses a selective systemic weed control program to fight Yellow Rocket in your lawn and landscaping, which ensures the herbicide is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
