Grassy Weed – Witchgrass

(Panicum capillare)

Witchgrass – also sometimes referred to as Tickle-grass or Witches-hair – is an annual grassy weed. Panicum capillare is primarily found growing in croplands, gardens, lawns and landscaping. Witchgrass is distributed throughout much of North America.

Identifying Witchgrass -

Witchgrass can be identified as a coarse, tufted, hairy annual that seeds heavily in the fall. It has a continuous collar that is broad and hairy, and its densely hairy sheaths are slightly compressed and purplish in color. Its blades are flat, sharply pointed and also densely covered in hair.

Witchgrass includes a seedhead made up of a spreading, densely seeded panicle. This seedhead can sometimes grow to be half the length of the entire plant.

Witchgrass Control -

The length and spreading nature of the panicle allows Witchgrass to distribute itself by seed over a large area, making cultural weed control methods difficult for removal. Professional weed control treatments should be considered.
