Grassy Weed – Velvetgrass

(Holcus lanatus)

Velvetgrass also referred to as Velvet-grass, Velvet Grass, and Common Velvet Grass – is a perennial grass that is often considered to be weedy. Preferring moist to wet soils, Holcus lanatus can often be found growing in lawns, drainage ditches, and other disturbed areas. Velvetgrass can be found throughout much of North America.

Identifying Velvetgrass -

Velvetgrass can be identified as a velvety perennial that is grayish-green in color. Its ligule is medium to tall, jagged at the top and hairy on the back. Its collar is continuous, hairy, and narrow. Velvetgrass also features compressed sheaths that are densely hairy with pink nerves. Its pointed blades are flat, soft and hairy.

Velvetgrass forms bunch like patches that enlarge rapidly by aggressive tillering. Reproduction is by seed.

Velvetgrass Control -

Velvetgrass is difficult to control using cultural methods alone – especially in lawns with poor drainage. Professionally applied weed controls are the best method for removing Velvetgrass in your lawn or other landscaping.

Turfgrass - Velvetgrass

Scotts LawnService recommends cultural weed control practices to reduce Velvetgrass in your lawn. This is due to the limited number of selective weed control product options to kill this weed. However, this weed can be controlled with non-selective weed controls such as Round-Up®, which will kill this weed and surrounding turfgrass. Re-seeding may be necessary to repair treated areas where Round-Up is used.
