The Two-Lined Spittlebug, also known as Prosapia bicinata, is a jumping and flying lawn insect affecting centipedegrass, bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, bahiagrass, and various ryegrasses. The Two-Lined Spittlebug can be found in much of the southeastern United States, from parts of Texas to North Carolina.
Identifying Two-Lined Spittlebug -
In its adult state, Two-Lined Spittlebug is boat-or wedge-shaped with reddish eyes and legs. Their bodies are dark brown to black in color with two prominent reddish-orange bands across the wings and a thinner band across the region between the body and head. Nymphs are pale yellow with a small orange spot on each side of the abdomen which enlarges after each molting. These nymphs are usually covered by a “spittlemass” a white, frothy protective barrier. Adults do not produce “spittle masses”, but will jump and fly short distances when disturbed.
Initial damage from Two-Lined Spittlebug feeding causes areas of turf to turn yellow, and then brown. During feeding, a toxin is injected which translocates throughout the plant, causing death. Severe infestations may cause a sparse or blighted appearance throughout a yard. Additionally, the frothy spittle masses are usually considered aesthetically undesirable.
Two-Lined Spittlebugs are most active at night and on dark cloudy days. When disturbed, a droplet of liquid appears at the anal opening. This droplet, along with the dorsal anus, is only visible with a 10x lens.
Eggs are produced over summer from June to October and the majority of these mites’ activity is during the winter months. Two overlapping generations may occur during the winter with peak populations being found in late December and late February.
