Grassy Weed – Torpedograss

(Panicum repens)

Torpedograss – also referred to as Bullet grass, Coastal Bermuda grass, Couch Panicum, Creeping Panic, Dogtooth grass, Panic Rampant, and Quack grass – is a perennial grassy weed. Panicum repens is typically found growing in marshy shores, disturbed sites, canals, and in poorly drained soils. Torpedograss is commonly found in tropical and subtropical climates, including the southeastern, southwestern, and gulf coasts of North America.

Identifying Torpedograss -

Torpedograss can be identified as a perennial with creeping, sharply pointed rhizomes. Its stems are stiff and vertically growing and its leaves are either folded or flat and hairy on upper surface. The ligule has a fringe of hairs on its upper margin.

It is rare for this plant to reproduce by seed. Main reproduction is done by rhizomes.

Torpedograss Control -

Torpedograss is a difficult weed to eradicate, once established in a lawn or landscaping. It is tolerant of drought and partial shade, requiring professionally applied herbicides for removal.

Torpedo Grass

Scotts LawnService recommends cultural weed control practices to reduce Torpedograss in your lawn and landscaping. This is due to the limited number of selective weed control product options to kill this weed. However, this weed can be controlled with non-selective weed controls such as Round-Up, which will kill this weed and surrounding turfgrass. Re-seeding may be necessary to repair treated areas where Round-Up is used.
