Grassy Weed – Texas Sedge

(Carex texensis)

Texas Sedge – also sometimes referred to as Mangspike Flatsedge – is a summer annual grassy weed. Carex texensis often occurs in sandy soils ranging from dry to moist to wet. It frequently occurs in turf. In the United States, Texas Sedge can be found as far northeast as New York and as far southwest as Texas. It can also be found in parts of California.

Identifying Texas Sedge -

Texas Sedge can be identified as a summer annual with stems of varying heights. It features reddish-brown to greenish-brown blades. It also features a branching seedhead that varies from tightly clustered to open and diffusely spreading. The seedhead produces seeds in long, very narrow spikes that are flattened and yellowish to reddish-brown in color.

Texas Sedge produces seeds from midsummer through early fall.

Texas Sedge Control -

Cultural control methods are typically not effective for removing Texas Sedge once it has invaded your lawn. Professionally selected and applied weed control treatments, based on a thorough analysis of your lawn’s unique climate and geography, are recommended for removal.

Texas Sedge

Selective post-emergent weed control treatments are recommended to fight Texas Sedge in your lawn and landscaping. A systemic weed control program ensures that the control product is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
