Grassy Weed – Surinam Sedge

(Cyperus surinamensis)

Surinam Sedge – also sometimes referred to as Tropical Flatsedge – is a perennial grassy weed. Preferring moist to wet areas, Cyperus surinamensis is often found in ditches, marshes and turfgrass areas. Surinam Sedge can be found throughout the American southeast and as far northwest as Kansas.

Identifying Surinam Sedge -

Surinam Sedge can be identified as a perennial weed with a triangular stem. The stem includes downward curving prickles and is rough to the touch when rubbed upward. There are a few long leaves at the top of the stem, which is located under the seedhead. The seedhead consists of numerous tightly congested clusters of spikes on long stalks.

Surinam Sedge flowers from late spring until the first frost. Reproduction is by seed.

Surinam Sedge Control -

Cultural weed control methods are not recommended for removing Surinam Sedge if it has invaded your lawn or landscaping. Professionally selected and applied weed control treatments are the most effective method.

Surinam Sedge

Selective post-emergent weed control treatments are recommended to fight Surinam Sedge in your lawn and landscaping. A systemic weed control program ensures that the control product is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
