Grassy Weed – Quackgrass

(Agropyron repens)

Quackgrass – also referred to as Creeping Quackgrass – is a perennial grass that is extremely difficult to eradicate once established. Agropyron repens can be found growing in agronomic crops, turfgrass, lawns and other landscaping. Quackgrass can be found throughout much of the U.S., with the exception of some of the southeastern most areas near Florida and Louisiana.

Identifying Quackgrass -

Creeping Quackgrass can be identified as a green- to silver- colored perennial grass. Its ligule is very short and its collar is broad and continuous. Creeping Quackgrass also features claw-like auricles that are slender and clasp close to the the stem. Its sheaths are not compressed and there are short hairs on the lower sheaths, while the upper sheaths are smooth. Its blades are flat and pointed – rough on the upper surface and smooth below.

Quackgrass features a seedhead forming a spike containing two rows of spikelets. Long, sharp-tipped rhizomes are also formed and are very aggressive. Quackgrass remains green year round.

Quackgrass Control -

Quackgrass is very difficult to manage with cultural weed control practices. Physical removal (hand-pulling or digging) is not effective due to the aggressive, well-developed rhizomes present in the root system. Professionally applied, post-emergent weed control are the best choice for removal of Quackgrass.

Scotts LawnService recommends cultural weed control practices to reduce Quackgrass in your lawn and landscaping. This is due to the limited number of selective weed control product options to kill this weed. However, this weed can be controlled with non-selective weed controls such as Round-Up®, which will kill this weed and surrounding turfgrass. Re-seeding may be necessary to repair treated areas where Round-Up is used.
