Grassy Weed – Purple Nutsedge

(Cyperus rotundus)

Purple Nutsedge – also sometimes referred to as Purple Nut-grass, Nutgrass, Coco-sedge and Coco-grass – is a perennial grassy weed. Cyperus rotundus is often found in croplands, turfgrass, and landscaping areas. Purple Nutsedge can be found in various parts of North America.

Identifying Purple Nutsedge -

Purple Nutsedge can be identified as a rapidly-spreading perennial grassy weed that is deep-green in color. It features three-ranked basal leaves which are flat or slightly corrugated. The basal leaves are usually shorter than the flowering stem, abruptly tapering at the tip. Purple Nutsedge also includes a purple to reddish-brown seedhead, formed at the end of a triangular stem.

Purple Nutsedge also produces oblong tubers that are covered with hairs. These tubers can be found connected by rhizomes and are bitter to the taste.

Purple Nutsedge Control -

Purple Nutsedge is commonly a weed of poorly drained soils, so cultural weed control methods – including turf irrigation and water management – can help prevent this weed from spreading. However, professionally selected and applied weed control treatments are necessary for complete removal.

Selective post-emergent weed control treatments are recommended to fight Purple Nutsedge in your lawn and landscaping. A systemic weed control program ensures that the control product is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
