Broadleaf Weed – Oxalis

(Oxalis stricta)

Also referred to as Common Yellow Oxalis, Yellow Woodsorrel, Sourgrass, Sheepsorrel and Toadsorrel, Oxalis is a perennial weed that can act as a summer annual in cooler climates. Oxalis stricta is found in most parts of the continental United States.

Identifying Oxalis -

Oxalis can be identified by stems that are green to purple in color and mostly un-branched, but with branches sometimes growing from the base. Its leaves grow on long petioles with three heart-shaped leaflets. Often confused with Clover, Oxalis leaves often fold up during midday and night.

In bloom, Oxalis features small, yellow flowers with five petals that occur in clusters. Reproduction is by seeds, which explode out from the pods can scatter considerable distances.

Oxalis Control -

Proper cultural practices, such as proper mowing and watering, can help to prevent Oxalis by creating dense turf, which inhibits the weed’s ability to grow. Physical removal (i.e. “weed pulling”) can be effective, although you will run the risk of spreading the seeds to additional areas of your lawn.
