Nimblewill is a perennial grass that can become an aggressive grassy weed in undesired areas. Primarily a weed of lawns and turfgrass, Muhlenbergia schreberi can also occur in nurseries, orchards, and landscapes. Nimblewill can be found throughout much of the United States, with the exception of the Pacific Northwest and parts of the Southwest.
Identifying Nimblewill -
Nimblewill can be identified as a delicate, mat-forming perennial that is blue-green in color and has a reclining growth habit, often rooting at the nodes. Its ligule is short, jagged and its collar is medium, smooth, with long hairs at the edges. The sheaths are compressed, featuring a prominent white membrane along the edges, and the blades are flat, short and narrow, with pointed tips.
Nimblewill is a warm season grass that goes dormant in northern climates, browning during winter. It resembles Creeping Bentgrass in appearance and growth habit and is often confused with Bermudagrass.
Nimblewill Control -
In warmer climates, Nimblewill can be extremely aggressive in un-fertilized turf – especially in shady areas. Cultural weed control methods – including low-level lawn mowing – can discourage Nimblewill but are not always effective. Professionally applied, post-emergent weed controls are the best choice for removal.
Scotts LawnService recommends cultural weed control practices to reduce Nimblewill in your lawn and landscaping. This is due to the limited number of selective weed control product options to kill this weed. However, this weed can be controlled with non-selective weed controls such as Round-Up®, which will kill this weed and surrounding turfgrass. Re-seeding may be necessary to repair treated areas where Round-Up is used.
