Broadleaf Weed – Hyssop Spurge

(Chamaesyce hyssopifolia)

Hyssop Spurge, also referred to as Hyssopleaf Sandmat, is a warm season annual broadleaf weed. Preferring dry, sandy soils, Chamaesyce hyssopifolia can be found in lawns, agricultural sites and other disturbed areas. Hyssop Spurge thrives in many of the southeastern United States.

Identifying Hyssop Spurge -

Hyssop Spurge is a warm-season annual with smooth, alternate stems that are branched at the upper nodes. The weed features a milky, reddish colored sap. Its leaves are serrate and have lopsided bases.

Hyssop Spurge flowers from mid- through late-summer, producing inconspicuous pink to white colored flowers. Reproduction is by seed.

Hyssop Spurge Control -

Hyssop Spurge can thrive in turfgrass and can be very difficult and time consuming to remove by hand. Other cultural weed control methods are equally ineffective due to the large number of seedlings.
