The Greenbug Aphid also known as Schizaphis graminum, is a lawn insect that primarily affects Kentucky bluegrass but can sometimes be found on annual bluegrass, Canada bluegrass, Chewings fescue, and Tall Fescue. The Greenbug can be found in most parts of North America and seems to be more of a problem in healthy lawns.
Identifying Greenbug Aphids -
In its adult state, Greenbug Aphids have a pear-shaped body that is light green in color and usually includes a dark green stripe down the back. The tips of its legs and antennae are black. Nymphs have the same appearance as the adults, except are smaller. Winged forms of the Greenbug Aphid can also appear, usually when overpopulation occurs.
Fluid injected into the turfgrass plant during feeding causes the tissue around the point of injection to turn yellow, then orange. Heavy infestations will result in areas of a lawn turning a distinct burnt orange color. Turf damage is most commonly found around the base of trees but can also be found along foundation walls, fences and other upright objects. Depending on the time of year, damage can resemble that of the lawn disease known as rust or early winter dormancy.
Greenbug Aphid Life Cycle -
In southern states, generations of Greenbug Aphids are continuous. In the north, females asexually produce other females which develop anywhere from five to fourteen generations per year. In the fall, the females produce males who then mate with females to produce eggs for overwintering.
