Grassy Weed – Globe Sedge

(Cyperus globulosus)

Globe Sedge – also sometimes referred to as Pinebarren Flatsedge – is a perennial grassy weed. Preferring moist to dry, sandy habitats, Cyperus globulosus commonly occurs in turfgrass areas (such as lawns). Globe Sedge thrives throughout much of the southeastern and parts of the western United States.

Identifying Globe Sedge -

Globe Sedge can be identified as a perennial with densely tufted stems. It features smooth, flat blades that are very dense and bright green in color. Its seedhead branches at the top of the stem, producing seeds in loose, globe-like clusters.

Globe Sedge produces seeds from summer into early fall.

Globe Sedge Control -

Cultural weed control methods – including proper lawn mowing and watering practices as well as physical removal (weed pulling) – are not the best method for combating Globe Sedge in your lawn or landscaping. Professionally selected and applied weed control treatments are recommended.

Globe Sedge

Selective post-emergent weed control treatments are recommended to fight Globe Sedge in your lawn and landscaping. A systemic weed control program ensures that the control product is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
