Broadleaf Weed – American Burnweed

(Erechtites hieraciifolia)

American Burnweed is a robust summer annual broadleaf weed that can be found in much of the mid-western to eastern United States and parts of the west coast. American Burnweed thrives in moist or damp areas, including fields, thickets and along roadsides. This summer annual can also be found in recently burned or scorched areas and gives off a foul odor when crushed or broken.

Identifying American Burnweed -

American Burnweed features long, solid stems that can be either smooth or hairy. Its leaves spiral into narrow, sharp pointed bases on the lower part of stem and form clasping bases on upper part of stem. The leaf margins are unevenly toothed and feature a white midrib. American Burnweed also has a short, fat taproot and may have many prop roots branching out of it.

American Burnweed has white flowers blooming in mid- to late-summer and reproduces by wind-dispersed seeds.

American Burnweed Control -

Cultural weed control methods can be effective at minimizing the presence of American Burnweed. These methods including proper mowing practices and aerating the soil in your lawn. Soil aeration relieves thick, compacted thatch layers, which inhibits a healthy thick lawn, providing room for this weed to germinate.

Scotts LawnService recommends a selective systemic weed control program to fight American Burnweed in your lawn and landscaping, which ensures the herbicide is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
