Broadleaf Weed – Dichondra

(Dichondra repens)

Dichondra – also referred to as Carolina Dichondra, Ponyfoot, and Carolina Ponyfoot – is a perennial broadleaf weed. Preferring moist to wet areas, Dichondra repens is a common weed of lawns, although is often planted intentionally as groundcover. Dichondra can be found in warm, moist areas of the United States – especially along the southeast, gulf and west coasts.

Identifying Dichondra -

Dichondra can be identified as a creeping perennial that thrives in warm, tropical areas. Its leaves are alternate, sparsely-hairy, and kidney-shaped with round, continuous, un-toothed margins and long petioles. The shape of the leaves resembles a pony’s foot. In solid stands, it makes a pleasing but rather delicate lawn.

Dichondra flowers mainly in spring, producing inconspicuous white flowers with five petals. Dichondra has little ability to withstand freezing temperatures.

Dichondra Control -

When unwanted, Dichondra can be tough to remove with cultural control methods. The weed is popular as a ground cover because it is able to withstand low lawn mowing heights, forming a carpet like blanket over the ground. Professionally applied herbicides are the best bet for removal.

Scotts LawnService uses a selective systemic weed control program to fight Dichondra in your lawn, which ensures the herbicide is moved throughout the weed, killing it completely root and all.
