Broadleaf Weed – Cinquefoil

(Potentilla spp.)

Also commonly known as Old-field Five-fingers or Wild Strawberry, Cinquefoil is a laterally growing perennial weed that is often found on acidic, nutrient-poor, dry, sandy soils. Potentilla found throughout much of the continental United States.

Identifying Cinquefoil -

Cinquefoil (or Wild Strawberry) can be identified by its tough, wiry stoloniferous stems. The stems elongate, but then arch to the ground and root at the tips. Cinquefoil also features glossy, dark-green blades on the upper surface that are hairy to sometimes white-woolly beneath.

Cinquefoil produces attractive yellow flowers with 5 petals and these plants are often sold in nurseries. Several species can be found in home lawns.

Cinquefoil Control -

While some people welcome Cinquefoil in their lawns, it is not always a welcome plant. Since Cinquefoil is low growing, frequent mowing will not inhibit the propagation of this weed through the lawn.
