Bermudagrass – also referred to as Couchgrass, Wiregrass, and Devil’s-grass – is a perennial grassy weed, often displacing desirable turf. Preferring disturbed areas, Cynodon dactylon can often be found growing in gardens, croplands, orchards, landscaped areas, lawns and gardens. Bermudagrass can survive in most parts of the continental United States.
Identifying Bermudagrass -
Bermudagrass can be identified as a mat forming perennial grass. Its leaves are smooth on both sides and its ligule is membranous with a fringe of hairs. It also has similar hairs occurring on the margins at the top of the sheath. Bermudagrass leaves can range from gray-green to bluish-green in color and eventually turn straw-colored with frost.
Many types of Bermudagrass are often used as a desired turf for home lawns, golf courses and athletic fields. However, it has been known to escape containment into virtually any open habitat and can be difficult to eradicate once established in an area where it is undesirable.
Bermudagrass Control -
Bermudagrass is a highly invasive (sometimes noxious) grass that is extremely difficult to eradicate once present among other, desirable stands of turfgrass. Physical removal (hand pulling) is not a practical option and other cultural control methods are largely ineffective.
Scotts LawnService recommends cultural weed control practices to reduce Bermudagrass in your lawn and landscaping. This is due to the limited number of selective weed control product options to kill this weed. However, this weed can be controlled with non-selective weed controls such as Round-Up®, which will kill this weed and surrounding turfgrass. Re-seeding may be necessary to repair treated areas where Round-Up is used.
