Grassy Weed – Annual Kyllinga

(Cyperus sesquiflorus)

Annual Kyllinga – also sometimes referred to as Fragrant Kyllinga or Fragrant Spikesedge – is a perennial grassy weed. Cyperus sesquiflorus is most often found in moist disturbed areas, including in turfgrass places such as lawn and landscaping areas. Annual Kyllinga thrives throughout the southeastern United States.

Identifying Annual Kyllinga -

Annual Kyllinga can be identified as a perennial grassy weed with a bunch-type growth habit. It features a single seedhead that is round, elongated and is sometimes lobed. It also includes three to four leaves growing perpendicular to the stem at the base of the head.

Annual Kyllinga produces seeds from midsummer until the first frost. It also emits a sweet aroma when its leaves are mowed or crushed.

Annual Kyllinga Control -

Annual Kyllinga can be tough to control with simple cultural control methods, such as lawn mowing and weed pulling. Professionally applied weed control treatments are recommended for complete removal.
